Here's some research that you will never find anywhere on the BBC. Primarily because it goes against every piece of disinformation their chums in tobacco control have been flinging at them, but also because it hasn't been compiled by some loopy snake oil salesman from Yankland.

No, this emanates from British researchers (full pdf here), is bang up to date, and derives data from the British Household Panel Survey ... so will therefore be dutifully ignored by Nanny Beeb.

At the time of the introduction of the ban on smoking in public spaces, anti-tobacco zealots frequently championed the claim that the new law would lead to a dramatic reduction the amount of people smoking. Such claims were made with such evangelical zeal that one could have been forgiven for thinking they were backed up with a detailed scientific study - or at least some basis of fact. Not so. Indeed, now such research has been carried out it has proved their claims to be totally bogus.

To some extent, 1000-year temperature histories are moderately irrelevent to modern global warming discussions. In fact, it is fairly amazing that the evidence of tree rings and such over 1000 years is discussed more than the instrumental record of the last 100, which tends to undercut most catastrophic warming forecasts. However, catastrophists have attempted to use these past temperature reconstructions to make the argument that temperatures were incredibly stable and low right up to the point that man has made them higher and less stable in the last 100 years. For this reason it is worth discussing them, if only to refute this conclusion.
